When it comes to comfort food, few dishes evoke the same nostalgic feelings as Homemade Chili Dogs. Perfectly grilled hot dogs nestled in soft buns and topped with a rich, flavorful chili create an irresistible combination that tantalizes the taste buds.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup beef broth or water
8 hot dogs (beef or turkey)
8 hot dog buns
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or turkey until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Add the chopped onions and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onions are translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
Stir in the chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
Pour in the diced tomatoes and beef broth (or water), then add the kidney beans. Stir well to combine.
Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 20-30 minutes.
While the chili is simmering, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill the hot dogs until they are heated through and have grill marks, about 5-7 minutes.
Toast the hot dog buns on the grill for the last 1-2 minutes, until they are lightly golden.
Assemble the chili dogs by placing a grilled hot dog in each bun and generously spooning the homemade chili on top.
Garnish with your choice of toppings, such as shredded cheese, diced onions, or jalapeño slices.
