Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1 inch thick.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F). Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil or butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and diced onion. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are translucent.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom and onion mixture. Stir well to coat and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce, ensuring there are no lumps. Add dried thyme and season with salt and pepper. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
  5. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Let them simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. Transfer the Salisbury steak and gravy to a serving plate, ensuring each patty is generously coated in the mushroom gravy. Serve with your favorite sides.
